Origin
Produced in the Douro Valley, one of Portugal’s oldest and most prestigious wine regions, Quinta do Vallado is a historic estate founded in 1716. The vineyards are located on steep terraces along the Douro River, benefiting from a unique microclimate and schist soils ideal for red grape cultivation.
Variety
The red blend typically includes traditional Douro grape varieties:
- Touriga Nacional
- Touriga Franca
- Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo)
- Other indigenous varieties from the Douro region
Production
The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve varietal character. The wine is then aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for several months to develop complexity and structure. Modern winemaking techniques are combined with traditional practices to maintain the estate’s heritage and quality standards.
Tasting notes
Quinta do Vallado Douro Red exhibits a deep ruby color with vibrant aromas of ripe red and black fruits such as cherry, blackberry, and plum, complemented by subtle floral notes and hints of spice and vanilla from oak aging. On the palate, it is well-balanced with smooth tannins, fresh acidity, and a lingering finish marked by complexity and elegance.
Food pairings
- Grilled or roasted red meats (beef, lamb)
- Hearty stews and casseroles
- Game dishes such as venison or wild boar
- Mature cheeses like aged cheddar or Manchego
- Portuguese cuisine specialties including roasted chorizo and bacalhau dishes
