Origin
Produced in the Douro Valley, Portugal, one of the oldest and most prestigious wine regions known for Port wine production.
Estate: Quinta da Pacheca, a historic vineyard with a tradition dating back to the 18th century.
Variety
The wine is a blend of traditional Portuguese grape varieties commonly used in Port production, including:
- Touriga Nacional
- Touriga Franca
- Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo)
- Tinta Barroca
- Tinto Cão
Production
The tawny Port is aged for a specified number of years in seasoned oak casks, allowing gradual oxidation and evaporation which imparts its characteristic amber color and complex flavors.
Key steps include:
- Fermentation of grape must followed by fortification with grape spirit to stop fermentation and retain natural sweetness.
- Extended aging in oak barrels to develop nutty, caramel, and dried fruit notes.
- Blending of wines from different vintages to achieve consistent style and quality.
Tasting notes
Color: Warm amber to golden brown hue, typical of aged tawny Ports.
Aroma: Intense bouquet with notes of dried fruits such as figs and raisins, complemented by hints of toasted nuts, caramel, and subtle spices.
Palate: Smooth and velvety texture with balanced sweetness and acidity. Flavors of toffee, honey, and nuts unfold on the palate, finishing with a long, elegant aftertaste.
Food pairings
Ideal to accompany:
- Cheese platters, especially blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton
- Desserts featuring nuts, caramel, or dried fruits such as pecan pie or almond tart
- Chocolate-based desserts, particularly dark chocolate
- As a digestif served slightly chilled or at room temperature
