Origin
Produced in the Douro Valley, Portugal, a renowned region for Port wine production. The Messias winery is established in Vila Nova de Gaia, near Porto, where the wine is aged and bottled.
Variety
Colheita Port is made from a blend of traditional Douro grape varieties, typically including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão.
Production
- Grapes are hand-harvested from a single vintage year, as Colheita Ports are vintage-dated tawny Ports.
- Fermentation is stopped early by the addition of grape spirit (aguardente), preserving natural sweetness and alcohol content.
- The wine is aged in oak casks for a minimum of 7 years, often longer, allowing complex oxidative aging and development of rich aromas.
- Bottling occurs after extended aging, without blending with other vintages.
Tasting notes
Messias Colheita Port exhibits a deep amber to mahogany color with complex aromas of dried fruits such as figs and raisins, toasted nuts, caramel, and subtle spices. On the palate, it is rich and smooth with balanced sweetness, a velvety texture, and a long, warming finish marked by hints of vanilla and oak.
Food pairings
- Perfect accompaniment to mature cheeses like blue cheese, aged cheddar, or gouda.
- Pairs well with desserts featuring nuts, caramel, or dried fruits such as walnut tart or fig cake.
- Excellent served alongside foie gras or pâté for a luxurious appetizer.
- Can be enjoyed on its own as a digestif after meals.
