Origin
Produced in the Douro Valley, Portugal, the Barros Porto Tawny is crafted in one of the world's most renowned wine regions for Port wine production.
Variety
The wine is typically a blend of traditional Portuguese grape varieties used in Port production, including but not limited to:
- Touriga Nacional
- Touriga Franca
- Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo)
- Tinta Barroca
- Tinto Cão
Production
Barros Porto Tawny is produced by fermenting the grape must and then fortifying it with grape spirit to halt fermentation, preserving natural sweetness and alcohol content. The wine is then aged in wooden casks for a minimum of the stated years (e.g., 10, 20, 30 years), allowing oxidative aging that develops its characteristic tawny color and complex flavors.
Tasting notes
Barros Porto Tawny exhibits a rich amber to tawny color with aromas of dried fruits, nuts, caramel, and subtle spices. On the palate, it is smooth and well-balanced with flavors of toasted almonds, figs, honey, and a lingering finish marked by gentle sweetness and complexity.
Food pairings
- Pairs excellently with aged cheeses such as blue cheese or Manchego
- Complements nut-based desserts and pastries
- Serves well alongside dried fruits and chocolate desserts
- Ideal as a digestif after rich meals
