Origin
Produced in the Douro Valley, Portugal, a renowned region for Port wine production. Messias is a well-established Port house with a history dating back to the 19th century.
Variety
This Tawny Port is typically made from a blend of traditional Portuguese grape varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão.
Production
The wine undergoes fortification with grape spirit to halt fermentation, preserving natural sweetness and alcohol content. It is then aged in wooden casks for the specified number of years, allowing oxidative aging which develops complex nutty and caramel characteristics typical of Tawny Port.
Tasting notes
- Appearance: Amber to deep golden brown color with a clear, bright intensity.
- Aroma: Rich aromas of dried fruits such as figs and raisins, complemented by notes of nuts, caramel, and subtle spices.
- Palate: Smooth and velvety texture with balanced sweetness and acidity. Flavors echo dried fruits, toasted nuts, honey, and a hint of vanilla.
- Finish: Long, warm, and lingering with a delicate oxidative character.
Food pairings
- Perfect accompaniment to desserts featuring nuts, caramel, or dried fruits such as pecan pie, almond tart, or crème brûlée.
- Pairs well with blue cheeses like Stilton or Roquefort.
- Excellent served slightly chilled as an aperitif or with rich chocolate-based desserts.
